To my fellows Scientist Mothers in this Time of Uncertainty

As we head into another week filled with uncertainty, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the weight many of us are feeling. The disturbing executive orders affecting the NIH and DEI efforts cut deeply—because DEI isn’t just an initiative; it’s woven into the very fabric of who we are and what we do as scientists. It fuels innovation, strengthens teams, and creates a future where all voices are valued.

These anti-DEI efforts affect us in profound ways—as women, as mothers, and as individuals who are underrepresented in science and academic medicine leadership. They challenge the inclusive environments we’ve worked so hard to build, for ourselves and for the next generation of scientists.

In the face of these challenges, I urge you to lean on each other. Our collective strength, resilience, and shared vision will carry us through. You are brilliant, resourceful problem solvers who rise to challenges every day, in both your careers and your lives. This moment is no different.

Remember to focus on what is within your control—getting that paper to the finish line, leading your labs, advocating for what is right, and the small, meaningful ways you can make a difference. Even in uncertainty, progress is possible. And please, don’t lose hope. You are not alone in this.

If you need someone to talk to, I am here. Let’s navigate this together, as we always do—stronger, wiser, and more determined to create a world where science and equity thrive side by side.

You are doing extraordinary work in extraordinary times.
