Iโ€™m pretty good about prioritizing activities that fill my cupโ€”dinners with friends, choir, CrossFit. But building in time for truly uninterruptable, technology-free rest with just me and my thoughts? That tends to fall way down to the bottom of my list.

As Scientist Mothers, we live in a constant state of mental togglingโ€”from lab meetings to bedtime routines, grant deadlines to meal planning, inbox triage to making sure everyone has clean socks. ๐—ช๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ผ ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜†. What if I miss something urgent? What if my kidโ€™s school calls? What if a co-author needs something right now?

๐—•๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—นโ€”๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜. ๐Ÿ›‘ And the cost of never unplugging is steep: burnout, decision fatigue, and a baseline stress level so high we donโ€™t even notice it anymore.

Being completely unavailable, even for short bursts, is not indulgentโ€”itโ€™s essential. Itโ€™s how we reset, how we access creativity, how we remember who we are when weโ€™re not reacting to the next thing. Itโ€™s also ๐—ฎ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜โ€”trusting that the world wonโ€™t fall apart in our absence.

So, I challenge you: How can you create your own MRI moment this week? A short, intentional, completely unavailable window of timeโ€”no screens, no demands, no interruptions. Just you, your thoughts, and a chance to actually hear yourself think.
