Science, Leadership, and Motherhood: Meet the January 2025 MotherMind Cohort

It is an absolute privilege to introduce this powerhouse group of Scientist Mothers—leaders, innovators, and changemakers shaping the future of science while navigating the complexities of motherhood.

This cohort brings together scholars from across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada, representing a vast range of research disciplines—from basic science to clinical and translational research. Some are building their first labs, while others are leading multimillion dollar research portfolios that are transforming their fields.

Over the past month, I’ve had the honor of getting to know these remarkable women through our group, peer, and individual coaching sessions, where we’ve explored what it truly means to lead fulfilling lives—both in and outside the lab.

In our first session, we identified our core values and discussed a critical mindset shift: moving away from the relentless chase of accomplishments and instead, pursuing a life aligned with what truly matters. This shift is more than theoretical—it’s a powerful strategy to inoculate against burnout and cultivate lasting professional fulfillment.

Now, we’re putting theory into action! Yesterday, we designed experiments (a process they know well!)—for small, intentional changes to reclaim and prioritize their time. Over the next 2 weeks, they’ll be testing these experiments, stepping outside their comfort zones, and observing the impact. Then, we’ll come together to reflect, iterate, and grow.

What has been most profound, though, is hearing from them how much this shared space means to them—how deeply understood they feel, especially in this time of uncertainty in science. In a world that often demands we go it alone, they are reminded they are not alone.

Swipe through to meet these extraordinary Scientist Mothers—women who are not only advancing science but redefining what leadership looks like. 💚
