Leaning into Core Values During Times of Uncertainty
It was an honor to be invited to facilitate a workshop last Friday for the University of Pittsburgh's Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) LEADS Scholars program, titled "Leaning into Core Values during Times of Uncertainty."
This session was deeply inspiring. Scholars took the time to identify their core values and reflect on how to use them as a compass for decision-making amid uncertainty.
In a space of vulnerability and support, we explored how values can guide us—not just in our research and careers, but in how we navigate relationships, challenges, and change.
I was particularly moved by scholars who shared their commitment to empathy and compassion—not just for those who share their views, but also for those with whom they disagree. We discussed how they are leaning into these values in their interactions with others and, just as importantly, in their relationship with themselves.
We also explored the critical space between stimulus and response—what Susan David, Ph.D. calls "emotional agility." In times when the work these incredible scholars have devoted their lives to—and their very identities as minoritized individuals—are under threat, this space is where we can pause, choose intentionality, and respond in alignment with our values.
In these uncertain times, how are you leaning into your core values?💡
