Confession: This was the first year in 22 years that I actually took a break during the holiday season
Ever since high school, I have prided myself on working during that undefined foggy time between Christmas and the start of school or work in early January. I convinced myself that this gave me an edge over my competitors (who even were my competitors ⁉️). Whether it was squeezing in extra calculus studying 🧠 , pre-reading for college courses 🫣 , or writing that next grant, working through the holidays helped me feel like I was staying ahead.
This year, admittedly, I planned to do the same. I’m juggling my day job as a scientist while launching a business and raising two young daughters… it is A LOT.
But when friends extended a last-minute invitation to their family condo in Florida, I hesitated. A week away? A road trip with a 4-year-old and a 15-month-old (flights weren’t in the budget)? My science, business, and marriage 🤣 would survive—wouldn't they?
Eventually, we said yes. We packed the car and made the drive. And I am so glad we did.
Instead of heading straight toward burnout, I got to witness my daughters forming the most vulnerable, earnest, heartwarming friendships. I got to just sit and be. I reflected on the highs and lows of the past year and set intentions for what’s to come in 2025. ✨
I’ve realized that rest isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. It replenishes our creativity, renews our energy, and connects us to what truly matters.
So here’s my vow: I’ll be taking this time every year moving forward. Not to get ahead—but to be present, to reflect, and to remind myself that rest isn’t time lost; it’s the fuel that powers everything else.
Because when we choose to pause, we’re not falling behind—we’re laying the foundation for what’s possible. 💚
