It’s My Birthday Today!

Like many of you, I woke up this morning thinking about the mountain of work waiting for me—especially after taking time off last week for Thanksgiving. It felt like terrible timing to take a day for myself.

But here’s the truth: it always feels like bad timing to prioritize ourselves. The demands of work, family, and life never let up. As women, and especially as mothers, we’re often taught that prioritizing ourselves is selfish—that we should put everyone else’s needs ahead of our own.

But I’ve learned that taking care of myself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. I am a better scientist, a better partner, and a better mother when I take time to recharge.

So today, I’m practicing what I preach. I’m stepping away from work, spending an entire day thrift shopping, and treating myself to a massage. Is it "frivolous"? Maybe. But do I deserve it? Absolutely.

To my fellow scientist mothers: you matter. Your wellbeing matters. Let’s rewrite the narrative that self-care is indulgent or optional. Because when we show up for ourselves, we can show up more fully for everyone and everything else in our lives.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a vintage sweater somewhere out there with my name on it. 😉

How are you prioritizing yourself this week? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to cheer you on!
